Hosting tips for a fabulous Fish Supper

The RNLI and Fish Supper partners are here to support you every step of the way as you plan and host your supper. That’s why we have put together a collection of handy tips to help you make a big splash when your guests arrive for supper.

Plan your menu

Choosing your menu is one of the most exciting parts of hosting your Fish Supper. It can be as simple or as intricate as you like – as long as you’re comfortable with what you’re doing. Your guests are coming because they want to have fun with you and support our lifesaving work. Be realistic about what you want to make and you’ll have a great evening.

Get creative with the dinner table

The invites have gone out and the menu is sorted, so make sure your table doesn’t let you down in your quest for a fishy success. You can add some decorations inspired by the sea, fish, our lifeboats, or our crew members, or you can easily build on your own theme with some small decorative touches. You might want to print your menu, spring for a new table runner or simply display your autumn blooms front and centre. Be bold and express yourself, and you can’t go wrong.

Ask for donations before supper

You don’t need to feel awkward about asking your guests for donations. They’re coming because they want to support you and raise money for the RNLI. If you ask your guests for donations while they’re enjoying a glass of wine and nibbles, it makes it much more relaxed. You can also leave the collection envelope on the side or the centre of the table so people can give more if they like.

Music makes a difference

Great dinner parties are all about the company and the atmosphere. Music can be a great mood-setter and an icebreaker if you’re feeling nervous about hosting. Ask yourself what kind of music goes well with the food and think about what your guests like too. Bonus points for nautical or sea-themed playlists!

Play some games

Once supper is over, the fun doesn’t have to stop. Top up your guests’ wine glasses and play some games to end the night. Games are a great way to get your guests involved in the fun and the fundraising. Happy guests are usually generous guests and we’ve got a fish-themed quiz that will keep them entertained after dinner.
