Fethard Lifeboat Station

A beautiful day in County Wexford turned into a nightmare for Eoin and his girlfriend. They’d been on a walk with their 2-year-old cocker spaniel Wilson when he chased a seagull and fell over the cliff edge. Eoin ran home to get his kayak, thinking that he could get into the gulley and rescue Wilson quickly.

When Eoin paddled in, he realised how powerful the waves were and saw that Wilson was in a bad way. And as he tried to pull the dog aboard, he capsized and the rescue went horribly wrong.

Fethard crew members launched their D class lifeboat in dangerous conditions. With waves and rocks to contend with, it was one of their trickiest rescues. And while Wilson sadly didn’t survive, they rescued a bruised Eoin and brought him back to his girlfriend.

‘It was a team effort and everybody did their job perfectly. It was their first rescue close in to rocks and I have to say the crew did very well.’
